10 World Cup Facts

So today is the day that we all get excited with England starting their World Cup campaign.

So can England win the World Cup or will they simply be home before the Postcards !

1. The 2018 World Cup in Russia will be the 21st World Cup.

2. Brazil are the only team to have played in every World Cup.

3. No country from outside Europe and South America has ever won the World Cup.

4. The largest crowd for a World Cup match was in the 1950 final between Brazil and Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro. 199,954 people watched Uruguay beat Brazil 2-1.

5. The oldest player to have appeared in the World Cup was Roger Milla in 1994. He was 42 years old and played for Cameroon. He also scored a goal which makes him the oldest player to have scored a goal in the World Cup.

6. The youngest player to play in the World Cup was Norman Whiteside. He represented Northern Ireland in 1982 when he was 17 years and 41 days old.

7. The biggest win in the World Cup happened in 1982 when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1.

8. Geoff Hurst is the only player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup Final. He scored 3 goals as England beat West Germany in the 1966 final.

9. Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer was the first man to win the World Cup as a captain (1974), and then as a head coach (1990)

10. Only 8 countries have ever won the World Cup. But can you name them ?
